| Mike Oldfield was born in Reading, Berkshire on May 15th 1953. His parents, Raymond and Maureen were a doctor and a nurse respectively. Mike Oldfield is a composer, multi instrumental musician and his style blends together all kinds of music like electronic music, classical music, world music and new age music. Recently he has added dance to his list of achievements. His brother and sister, Terry and Sally are also successful musically and have taken part in many of his albums. Mike and his brother and sister were brought up according to the Roman Catholic faith to which his mother belonged.
Mike Oldfield started his career at quite a young age by playing the acoustic guitar in some of the folk clubs locally. He had two pieces of fifteen minutes each of instrumental music. While still in the early teens, Mike Oldfield was connected with a beat group which played music like the Shadows. Later, he along with his sister Sally performed folk music as a duo. He and his brother then created “Barefoot” which was a duo that took Mike Oldfield back to rock music.
Mike Oldfield’s best known album is Tubular Bells. The album was highly innovative, with Oldfield himself playing over twenty instruments of different kinds. The recording was done in Manor Studios which belongs to Richard Branson. |
